Google I/O 2026 announces a new era of search
At Google I/O 2026, the tech giant announced hundreds of updates across virtually every part of its business—including what the company called “the biggest upgrade to search in 25 years.”
While it’s no surprise, Google is baking AI into search more deeply than ever, and the updates are already beginning to roll out. Google’s AI Search goes way beyond autocomplete to anticipate your intent. Plus, you can search across modalities, with text, images, files, videos or Chrome tabs as inputs. You can even ask follow-up questions in the AI overview that flows into a fully conversational AI mode.
Here are just a few key areas where Google Search is changing.
- Google’s AI Generative UI extracts answers directly to display in dynamic summaries. Clear, specific text carries huge value here, while generic, fluffy content will be ignored.
- Agentic assistants are effectively acting as personal assistants, cross-referencing multiple platforms to verify that your community matches a user’s request and preferences. Having hyper-local, accurate information across your digital footprint (website, Google Business Profile, social channels, etc.) helps ensure your community will be included when local prospects are searching.
- Schema markup acts as a structured transfer for Google’s Gemini-powered AI, letting the system know exactly what you offer with no guesswork. If you’ve yet to implement schema, your site is less likely to be included in the search results, and what is included may be less than accurate.
- Google can now include visual assets directly inside the AI answer box, such as video tours, photography galleries, and more. That makes how you structure and name files and how your alt text is written more important than ever.
